A praiseworthy performance from Perth Glory in a nail biter against Adelaide United, sends them powering into the A-League Grand Final this Sunday.
It was an extraordinary game all round and produced some quality action that was definitely worthy of a semi-final. The win was by no means easy, with the game going first to extra time and then to a penalty shootout. In the end it took some pure quality from Glory goalie Liam Reddy to ensure their spot in the Grand Final that will be at home in Perth.
Perth Glory were only 1 goal to the good at half time thanks to a great Diego Castro finish in the 29th
minute. It then looked like it was in the bag when Castro slotted home his second with only 15 minutes to go.
It wasn’t to be however, as Adelaide showed no signs of giving up, and substitute Papa Diawara scraped one back in the 81st
minute. Then, with the final whistle virtually blown, Adelaide equalised in the dying seconds of stoppage time from a corner that Glory failed to deal with.
Extra time came and went with both teams scoring another 1 each but after 120 minutes the pair couldn’t be separated, and it finished 3-3. This left only a penalty shootout to decide which of the two teams would progress into the final game of the season.
The shootout was just as exciting as the game and it was edge of the seat stuff complete with saves from both sides taking it to sudden death. In the end it was an unbelievable performance from keeper Liam Reddy allowed Glory to clinch the win 5-4. Perth’s shot stopper saved an incredible 4 of Adelaide United’s attempts from the spot, and even put one away himself!
Sydney FC’s path to the Grand Final was a lot easier in a 7-goal thriller at their home ground in NSW, the game providing plenty of action. Although Melbourne Victory finished the season in third place, they just seemed shambolic on the night and Sydney made short work of them.
The Grand Final will go down at Optus Stadium instead of HBF Park this Sunday against Sydney FC! This will be an absolute blockbuster as two of the A-Leagues best teams battle it out to be crowned the 2019 champions.
