22 Sep An uplifting home transformation for a family in need
When the story of a young Craigie family hit us close to home, we wanted to help. The Buchan’s were in desperate need of a home renovation to accommodate their circumstances.
Along with Channel 7 and a huge group of generous suppliers, Nicheliving completed a massive home renovation. A small 3×1 home become a spacious 4×2 that included a whole second storey addition, a garden redesign, new kitchen, bathroom and laundry and a complete interior overhaul.
Nicheliving General Manager – Damien Liberatore – knew we could help make a difference and set about organising a complete home transformation in just three weeks.
“We took on the challenge to transform the house into a beautiful family home in just three weeks and are so pleased to be able to make this contribution to such a wonderful family,” he said.
The goal of this transformation was to expand the small brick and tile residence to provide more living space for the family of four. The new home also had to include wheelchair access to allow Robbie to easily and independently move around.
The unsuitable 3×1 become a beautiful new, double-storey 4×2 providing a functional living environment for the whole family.
Concept To Completion In Only Three Weeks
From the start to the finalised home, everything was completed in only three weeks:
- Full interior upgrade

- Stunning backyard makeover
Decking, wheelchair ramp, new grass lawn area, BBQ, garden beds, pergola, trampoline and swing
- A whole new level
Complete second storey master bedroom, bathroom and walk-in-robe suite added to the existing house
- Brand new carport
An 8.25 square metre carport and driveway built at the front of the house to cover part of the driveway
The Family’s Existing Home
The family of four lived in a very modest 3×1 in Craigie that provided only limited space. With Robbie’s condition, the home didn’t accommodate Robbie’s needs.
Robbie loves nothing more than being outdoors, but without wheelchair access, the backyard wasn’t suitable for Robbie to enjoy.
The Buchan’s family home badly needed a renovation and with the addition of two-year-old Luna, a full renovation looked like the best option.
The Second Storey Addition
The expertly designed Rubix second storey addition is a master bedroom suite complete with walk-in robe and ensuite bathroom. The new 34 square metre suite was constructed with everything built-in. Over the three week period all internal and external finishing, wet areas, plumbing and electricals were added to the module.
From there, the finished pod was transported from the Rubix factory in Rockingham to Craigie for installation onto the existing home in a single day.
Our expert teams prepared the existing home before installation. Part of the roof was removed to make space for the addition and construction of the base for the pod was completed.
The pod was then lifted onto the roof in under two hours. Once on, the roof was sheeted, plumbing and electricals were connected, and the staircase was added the next day.
Our innovative construction techniques mean a fast turnaround and minimal lifestyle disruption. We were able to meet the short timeframe and finished the transformation while Channel 7 had organised the family to stay with family members.
A Complete Garden Redesign
The original garden wasn’t suitable for Robbie’s. Without wheelchair access, Robbie couldn’t enjoy the outdoors that he loves so much.
The team from Deep Green redesigned the whole outside to make it accessible for Robbie. The previously unusable front and backyard became a stunning area for the kids to play and parents to relax.
No stone was left unturned. The team added timber decking, wheelchair access ramp, new grass and flat lawn area, BBQ, tree-lined garden beds, refurbished shade pergola, and a brand new trampoline and swing.
The Interior Revamp
Our experienced team of trades completed a full internal renovation in the existing downstairs home. Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, tilers and more were all-hands-on-deck to upgrade the interior.
We renovated the children’s bathroom to enable wheelchair access and created a separate laundry. The new design opened up the living and dining area to allow more space and make mobility easier.
Coastline Kitchens installed a brand-new kitchen, bathroom and ensuite vanities as well as the laundry cabinets and tops. Everything was donated and all the materials were also free of charge.
