12 Mar Mad About Madeley
Just 20km from Perth’s CBD, Madeley is a suburb that’s surging in popularity with couples and families, and it’s easy to see why. With a whole range of activities and attractions within shouting distance, the lifestyle is perfectly pitched for everyone from fitness fans and energetic children to lovers of the great outdoors.
When it comes to stocking up the house, all your immediate needs are covered by Kingsway City Shopping Centre right on the doorstep. But if you’re in the mood to make more of a day of it, the major Lakeside Joondalup shopping mall – with more than 300 shops and services on offer including H&M, Myer & JB Hifi – is a mere 15 minutes away.
FOOD AND DRINK
The undoubted hub of the local hospitality trade is the Kingsway Bar and Bistro, where you can pop in for beer or get stuck into a menu that goes above and beyond your average pub grub (twice-cooked pork belly with scallops, anyone?).
Of course, there are any number of restaurants and bars within a short drive of Madeley (think Hillarys and Joondalup for starters), but the real foodies will be most excited by being so close to the Swan Valley. The food and wine destinations in the Valley attract hungry pilgrims from all over the world – from Madeley, it’s just a short drive away.
With the coast 10 minutes away, there’s no excuse not to hit the water whenever you get the chance. The big drawcards are Mullaloo Beach – a 4km stretch that’s home to sailing and water-skiing as well as surfing at the right-hand break by Mullaloo Point – and Hillarys Boat Harbour, where you can not only get in the water at Stillwater Beach (complete with swimming pontoon) but also visit the AQWA sealife centre or charter a fishing tour, scuba trip or whale-watching experience, and that’s even before you hit the boardwark, shops and bars. A little way further north, Pinnaroo Point is the place for wind- and kitesurfing.
If fitness is your passion, you won’t have to look far to find a class, team or training options. Kingsway Indoor Stadium and Sporting Complex has everything from keep-fit groups to organised sessions of indoor footy, basketball, netball and soccer. But if watching is more your speed – or if speed is – Barbagallo Raceway is close by for some high-octane thrills.
Kids have dozens of parks and play areas to choose from. Standouts include the Dinosaur Park (complete with buried bones to dig for), Wanneroo Botanic Gardens and Mini Golf, and the epic wetlands of Herdsman Lake, with its boggling array of plants and wildlife. But perhaps the biggest ticket for outdoor fun is Whiteman Park, 20 minutes from Madeley and home to Caversham Wildlife Park, a motor museum, tram and train rides, parks, playgrounds, cycling routes and a whole lot more besides. They’ll be exhausted before you know it. For something more sedate – and a source of complete vintage cool – there’s always the Galaxy Drive-In Theatre. Screening all the latest films and just five minutes’ drive from Madeley, it’s so good you’ll never buy a DVD again.
